Softball

Berkshire 4, Rootstown 0

Whitney Davis and Moira Wonders helped pull the Badgers into a first-place tie with the Rovers atop the Chagrin Valley Conference’s Valley Division.

Wonders tossed a four-hit shutout, striking out 10 batters. The Berkshire pitcher was tremendous with runners on base after Rootstown got its leadoff hitter aboard in the third, fourth and sixth innings. Wonders also had an RBI single as part of the Badgers’ two-run top of the seventh to pull away. Davis, Berkshire’s leadoff hitter, provided a further spark, going 3 for 3 with a walk, double, two runs and four stolen bases.

Both Rootstown pitchers delivered strong performances, including Makensea Bittner allowing just an unearned run in her four innings of work.

The Rovers (9-6, 7-1 CVC Valley) still control their destiny with two league games remaining: at Kirtland (April 29) and home against Crestwood (May 7).

The Badgers (9-6, 7-1) control their own destiny as well with remaining league games against Crestwood (April 29) and Kirtland (date to be determined).

Southeast 7, LaBrae 2

The Pirates exploded for six runs in the first two innings and that was plenty for Liv Bragg, who allowed just two runs on five hits to earn the complete-game win. Bragg struck out seven against four walks. Lily Hayes walked twice and scored twice out of the leadoff spot while Kirsten Harvey led Southeast in hits and RBIs with two apiece. Lylia Lavigna and Morgan Muncy each added a double for the Pirates.

Waterloo 7, Springfield Local 3

Jolean Hampton pitched a complete game, holding the Tigers to three runs while striking out 12. The sophomore also singled, tripled, scored twice and drove in two runs. Bayley English and Kris Kehrer had a single and double apiece and combined to drive in five runs for the Vikings (7-5, 7-5 MVAC Scarlet).

Field 3, Coventry 1

Adrianna Berry tossed a three-hitter in a clash of the two top teams in the Metro Athletic Conference standings. Lilli Sutkowy added a homer for the Falcons (11-3, 7-0) while Averi Weis had a single and two doubles. Bella Smith homered for the Comets’ lone run.

Baseball

Field 11, Coventry 0

The Falcons erupted for nine runs in the bottom of the first, including Caden Kolesar notching a single, double and four RBIs. Joey Conroy added two singles and three runs while Caden Corbett singled twice and drove home two runs. That was plenty for James Roberts, who earned the complete-game win with five shutout innings.

Rootstown 7, Crestwood 4

After the Red Devils rallied from a 4-1 deficit to tie the score, the Rovers scored three in the top of the seventh to win it. George Luli and Landon Rodstrom each had two hits and two RBIs to pace Rootstown. Anthony Pratt got the win with two scoreless innings in relief, getting all six outs via strikeout. Michael McCulloch and Kyle Shelhamer had two hits apiece to lead Crestwood while Wyatt Januska added a triple.

LaBrae 3, Southeast 1

Landon Brunstetter tossed a complete game to hand the Pirates their first league loss, yielding just an unearned run on two hits and five walks while striking out 11. Brunstetter also went 1 for 2 with a double, walk, run and RBI. Dan Clint and Maverick Wood had a hit apiece for Southeast, which also got a complete game from Joe Sharish. Sharish yielded just three runs (one earned) on four hits and a walk while striking out nine.

Woodridge 6, Streetsboro 5

The Bulldogs took control of a back-and-forth MAC battle with a three-run bottom of the sixth. Noah Lancy and Jack Sweatt had two hits apiece to lead Woodridge, with Sweatt driving in a pair of runs and Lancy recording the Bulldogs’ lone extra-base hit with a double. Jayden Coffie had two hits (including a homer), two runs and two RBIs to lead the Rockets.
