Roundup: Pitchers shut door in Licking County League baseball wins

Evan Moore and Carter Davis combined on a three-hit shutout April 27, pitching the Lakewood baseball team to a 2-0 victory at Heath in Licking County League-Cardinal Division play.

Moore struck out three and allowed three hits in 5⅔ innings for the Lancers (5-9, 2-7), and Davis got the final four outs, striking out three. Garrett Hardway recorded a double and an RBI, and Grayson Ullman added a hit and an RBI and Tegan Riley a hit and a run.

Jamison Walsh scattered six hits and struck out three in a complete game for the Bulldogs (9-6, 7-3), who fell into a first-place tie with Newark Catholic and Northridge. Walsh and Dominic Morris each singled and walked.

Newark rolls on road

Brody Driskel tripled, doubled and singled, racking up four RBIs in Newark’s 13-1 victory at Groveport in Ohio Capital Conference-Buckeye Division play.

Luke Miller added two hits, including a triple, two runs and two RBIs, Bodie Smith two hits, including a double, two runs and an RBI and Moses Crane a triple, a run and an RBI for the Wildcats (12-2, 8-0), who maintained a one-game lead in the Buckeye and are ranked No. 17 in Division I in the state coaches poll. Daniel Hoberg struck out eight in five two-hit innings.

Utica edges Johnstown

Braxton Fisher struck out eight and allowed just one earned run in a three-hitter, pitching Utica to a 4-3 victory against visiting Johnstown in LCL-Cardinal play.

Nate Hite delivered a two-run single for Utica (5-12, 3-7). Elijah Bland added a double and a single and two runs and Jaxson Riggs a hit and a run.

Luke Carter recorded a hit and a run and Braeden Archibald a hit and an RBI for the Johnnies (6-8, 3-6). Landon Myers struck out two and allowed three earned runs in six innings.

Watkins wins at home

Dylan Gray hit a two-run home run, powering Watkins Memorial to a 7-2 victory against visiting Mount Vernon (3-10, 2-8) in LCL-Buckeye play.

Jax Dotson doubled and singled and scored a run, and Patrick Shroyer added a hit and a run and Cam Burt and Kaden Barrows a hit a run apiece for the Warriors (10-5, 7-3). Barrows also struck out four and allowed seven hits and one earned run in six innings.

Heights beats Zanesville

Stone Fenton struck out 11 without a walk, allowing four hits and one earned run in 5⅔ innings, pitching Licking Heights to an 11-2 victory against visiting Zanesville (7-9, 3-7) in LCL-Buckeye play.

Zach Bricker piled up three hits, including a triple, two runs and an RBI to lead the Hornets (3-9, 3-6). Remy Alcorn added two hits, two runs and two RBIs, A.J. Karl-Cassette two hits and two runs and Lance Burkhart two hits and an RBI.

GCA wins on road

Matthew Riedel struck out 10 and allowed just two hits and an unearned run in four innings, pitching Granville Christian to a 9-2 victory at Genoa Christian in Mid-Ohio Christian Athletic League play.

Josh Benvie and Samuel Merritt led the Lions (6-7, 4-3) with two hits, a run and two RBIs. Layton Sheppard added two hits, including a double, a run and an RBI, Aiden Geiger a triple, two runs and two RBIs and Aidan Rhoads two hits, including a triple, and a run.

SOFTBALL

Valley wins at Granville

Emory Whisner homered twice and doubled, racking up five RBIs in Licking Valley’s 12-1 victory at Granville in LCL-Buckeye play.

Whisner also struck out five in five innings for the unbeaten Panthers (15-0, 11-0), who remain ranked No. 2 in Division IV in the state coaches poll. D’Neya Dennis added a triple and double and four runs, Tori Baughman and Chloe Cooperrider two hits, including a double, apiece and a combined three RBIs and Emma Flowers two hits and a run.

Avary King homered for the Blue Aces (6-12, 2-8). Aubrey Lackey singled.

Lakewood wins late at Heath

Jaycie Montie singled home a run in Lakewood’s two-run seventh inning, lifting the Lancers to a 5-3 victory at Heath in LCL-Cardinal play.

Aleah Jackson notched two hits, two runs and an RBI to lead the Lancers (13-5, 8-2), who maintained a one-game lead on Johnstown, and Averi Adams added two hits, including a double, and two RBIs and Allie Stimmel a hit and two runs. Ashlyn Carder struck out four and allowed one hit in 5⅓ scoreless innings.

Natalie Blakely allowed six hits and two earned runs in six innings for the Bulldogs (2-13, 1-10). Lexi Purington doubled, scored a run and drove in a run, and Andrea Chaney added two hits and an RBI and Kate Zarins a double and an RBI.

Johnstown beats Utica

Lucia Kuhn was a perfect 4 for 4, knocking in four runs for Johnstown in a 13-5 victory against visiting Utica in LCL-Cardinal play.

Kuhn also struck out four in 4⅓ hitless innings of relief for the Johnnies (14-4-1, 7-3), who moved into the coaches poll for the first time ranked No. 7 in Division V. Riley Stefanick and Violet Wentzel each homered, combining for three RBIs, and Jenna Hochanadel added three hits, including a double, two runs and two RBIs and Abigail Wood two hits, a run and two RBIs.

Makena Wilson and Kaitlin Evans each homered, combining to drive in three runs for Utica (10-7, 6-5). Katie Kidd added a double and two RBIs.

NC wins at Northridge 

Veronica Bailey struck out 11 and allowed three hits and one run in four innings, pitching Newark Catholic to a 6-1 victory at Northridge in LCL-Cardinal play.

Aly Rothweiler struck out two in three one-hit scoreless innings of relief for the Green Wave (10-6, 6-5). Bailey also recorded two hits, including a double, three runs and an RBI, and Joanna Bailey added two hits and three RBIs and Rothweiler two hits and an RBI.

Gracie Smith and Ellie Reese hit back-to-back doubles in the fourth inning to score a run for the Vikings (6-12, 1-10). Reese also struck out two and allowed four earned runs in a complete game.

Heights beats Zanesville

Avery Potts doubled and singled, scored twice and drove in two for Licking Heights in an 11-1 victory against visiting Zanesville in LCL-Buckeye play.

Hayley Stout added a hit, three runs and two RBIs, Lily Reich a hit and three RBIs and Hailey Anderson a double and a single and a run for the Hornets (12-6, 6-4). Natalie Mahoney struck out eight in four one-hit innings.

Watkins falls late

Mount Vernon scored five runs during the final two innings, sending host Watkins Memorial to an 8-5 loss in LCL-Buckeye play.

Sierra Fuchs doubled twice and knocked in four runs for the Warriors (13-6, 7-4), who led 4-3 after five innings. Alli Langwasser added a double and a single and a run and Emma Jellison a hit and an RBI.

Newark falls at home

Mallory Back led the Wildcats (2-15, 1-10) with two hits and a run in a 20-1 loss to visiting Teays Valley in OCC-Buckeye play.

Lexi Shanaberg added two hits and an RBI.

Liberty drops home game

Katelyn Nestor led Liberty Christian with three hits, two runs and an RBI in a 15-4 loss to visiting Delaware Christian in MOCAL play.

Izzy Parson added three hits and two RBIs and Kayla Feeney two hits, including a double, a run and an RBI for the Eagles (4-9, 3-3).

BOYS TENNIS

Watkins wins at home

Gavin Adelman and Nathan Walter won a marathon three-set match, 7-5, 3-6, 7-5, at No. 1 doubles to give Watkins Memorial a 3-2 victory against visiting Big Walnut.

Matthew Reid, 7-5, 6-0, at No. 1 and Graham Smith, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 2 won singles matches for the Warriors (10-3).

Newark nips Fisher

Grayson Boyer and Will Bolte picked up a victory at No. 1 doubles, 6-3, 6-1, securing Newark’s 3-2 victory against Fisher Catholic.

Viktor Gleckler, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 2 and Wes Arnold, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 3 won singles matches for the Wildcats (7-4).
