Vote for Ames Tribune female Athlete of the Week for May 10-16

The week of May 10-16 saw Ames area track and field programs take part in state qualifying meets.

Ames ran in the 4A meet at Indianola and Ballard and Gilbert competed at the 3A meet in Alleman. Nevada went to the 3A meet at Clear Lake; Roland-Story hosted a 2A qualifying meet in Story City, and Collins-Maxwell and Colo-NESCO went to the 1A meet in Colfax.

Several female athletes from the Ames area punched a ticket to state. It was also a busy week of high school girls golf and soccer.

Here are the Ames Tribune female Athlete of the Week nominees for the week of May 10-16. AmesTrib.com readers vote to determine the winner, who will be announced at the end of the week.

Sophia Hatcher, Ames

Hatcher qualified for state in four events for the Ames girls track and field program during the Class 4A state qualifying co-ed-track and field meet in Indianola on May 14.

Hatcher won the girls 100-meter hurdles in 14.83 seconds and the girls long jump with a jump of 17 feet, 7.25 inches. She qualified with the sixth and seventh-best efforts in those events, respectively.

Hatcher also anchored Ames to victory in the shuttle hurdle relay with a time of 1:04.9 and she helped the Little Cyclones win the girls 4×400 in 3:58.45. Ames qualified fifth and sixth in those events, respectively.

Aubrey Johnson, Gilbert

Aubrey Johnson was part of four events that qualified for state at the 3A state qualifying co-ed track and field meet in Alleman on May 14.

Johnson won the long jump with the second-best qualifying jump in 3A at 18-4.25. She took first in the 100 hurdles with the fifth-best qualifying time at 15.26.

Johnson anchored Gilbert to victory in the girls 4×100 with the ninth-best qualifying time at 49.30. She also anchored the Tigers to a runner-up effort in the shuttle hurdle with the 12th-fastest qualifying time in 3A at 1:08.22

Elizabeth Erickson, Colo-NESCO

Erickson qualified for state in three individual distance events for the Colo-NESCO girls track and field program during the 1A qualifying meet at Colfax.

Erickson placed second in the girls 3,000 and third in both the 800 and 1,500. Her 3,000 time of 10:49.39 ranks eighth among 1A qualifiers, her 800 effort of 2:21.40 ranks fifth and her 4:57.54 showing in the 1,500 also ranks fifth.

Avilee Miller, Ballard

Miller is headed to the Iowa state girls and boys track and field championships for the first time.

The Bomber freshman will be competing in the 4×800 and 1,500 after qualifying at the 3A qualifying meet in Alleman on May 14.

Miller anchored Ballard to a runner-up time of 10:09.60 in the 4×800, which ranks 20th among 3A qualifiers. She took third in the 1,500 with a time of 4:55.44, which places her 12th in the 3A field heading into state.

Alexa Betting, Nevada

Betting had a huge game on offense for the Nevada girls soccer team during a 10-0 rout of Greene County on May 12 at Nevada.

Betting erupted for four goals on the night. She also dished out two assists to help the Cubs improve to 6-4-1 on the season.
