Portage County Water Rescue Team urges boaters to stay off the Cuyahoga River

The Portage County Water Rescue Team is imploring people to stay out of the Cuyahoga River, and wait until the water levels go down before enjoying kayaking and tubing again.

“Please stay off of the Cuyahoga River, between the incident in Cuyahoga Falls yesterday and 2 separate incidents in Kent today, the water is too strong and too fast for the non-professional,” PCWRT posted on Facebook on Sunday, June 22 in the evening.

In Cuyahoga Falls, a man and a 5-year-old boy were capsized Saturday, June 21 on the Cuyahoga River near the Sheraton Suites on Front Street. On the morning of Sunday, June 22, the body of the child was found. To date, the man has not been found.

At least one of the incidents in Kent occurred near the Kent-Stow border, according to the Kent Fire Department.

According to reports heard over the scanners, at least two people were rescued from the river somewhere in Kent, and the Munroe Falls Fire Department was called to assist Kent’s safety forces.
