Softball
Southeast 12, Rootstown 6
The Pirates set the tone with a three-run top of the first, including two-out RBI hits by sophomores Lylia Lavigna and Leah Mesaros. Southeast struck for four more runs in the third, including a two-run, bases-loaded single by sophomore Bella Mowery. Yet another sophomore, nine-hole hitter Natalie Campbell, went 3 for 4, including a picture-perfect bunt in the seventh as the Pirates (1-0) got a couple of key insurance runs.
They needed that insurance given how hard the Rovers (0-1) rallied, led by Cheyenne Cutright. The freshman singled, doubled and hit a two-run homer, along with giving Rootstown several solid innings of relief. Morgan Giebel also hit a two-run homer for the Rovers.
Waterloo 26, Memorial 5
Jolean Hampton, Kristlyn Kehrer and Mackenzie Marsh all homered as the Vikings’ lineup erupted. In addition to her homer, Hampton drew three walks, scored three runs and knocked in four. The sophomore also struck out five in two innings in the circle. Kehrer finished with four hits and five RBIs while Brilyn Eddy, Kendall Eichler and Emmalee Goodyear each went 2 for 2.
