Plain Township sets hearing date for Sanctuary Golf Club rezoning

PLAIN TWP. – Trustees have set a public hearing to consider rezoning for much of the former Sanctuary Golf Club property where developers want to build a senior living center, residential homes, apartments and a reserve with walking trails.

The meeting is slated for 6 p.m. May 28 at GlenOak High School, 1801 Schneider St. NE. Those planning to attend should enter through Door 17.

Township Administrator Lisa Campbell said GlenOak was selected because a large crowd is expected, and officials don’t want to go over capacity at Township Hall.

Ford Principle, formerly McKinley Development, is lobbying for a change from R-1 single-family residential to low-density R-3 residential on two parcels totaling nearly 70 acres for about 60 lots at the former golf course. Bill Lemmon and Dan DeHoff are partners of Ford Principle, which is based in North Canton.

About 60 people packed into Township Hall on May 13 for a public hearing hosted by the Township Planning Commission. Many residents voiced concerns about the proposed zoning change and housing development along Applegrove Street NW.

Planning commission members agreed 5-0 during the session to recommend approval to township trustees, a three-member board with final authority on the matter.

The Sanctuary, an 18-hole public golf course, closed at the end of the 2023 season, to the chagrin of many local golfers. It was one of several closures in recent years within Stark County, in addition to Tam O’Shanter, Skyland Pines and Seven Hills. Sanctuary owners said at the time that it wasn’t a financially sustainable business.

Since the course’s closure, the nearly 140 acres north of Applegrove Street NW have remained mostly dormant.
