CANTON ‒ An 11-year-old girl was in serious condition after colliding with a car while riding a scooter at the intersection of Johnnycake Ridge and 54th Street NE on the evening of Aug. 5.
A police report says the crash happened at 8:14 p.m. when the Plain Township girl hit a black 2019 Dodge Charger that was northbound on Johnnycake.
A Canton Fire Department ambulance took her to Aultman Hospital with injuries that were suspected to be serious, the police crash report said.
Christina Adam and Courtney Ayers, the aunt of the injured girl, have organized a GoFundMe account. The appeal had raised $7,500 as of the afternoon of Aug. 6.
Their appeal says Claire Millington was transferred from Aultman to Akron Children’s Hospital, where she remained in intensive care.
“Claire suffered multiple injuries, including a small brain bleed, a fractured collarbone, multiple leg fractures to the tibia & fibula which require surgery, and a small lung collapse (pneumothorax), as well as other injuries to the hip & knee,” the fundraising appeal said on Aug. 6. “After being intubated and sedated overnight, she was able to breathe well enough to have the breathing tube removed this morning — a major step forward and answer to prayer. As of this moment, she is in surgery with orthopedic specialists to begin repairing her leg.”
The organizers said Claire’s mother Ashley, who recently lost her job, hasn’t left her side.
The appeal says that funds raised will help cover meals, bills, transportation and other unexpected costs that come with being in the hospital and caring for Claire through recovery.
The collision occurred less than a mile from the girl’s home.
No citation had been issued as of the afternoon of Aug. 6.
