Ohio State health system picks name for new $2 billion tower at Wexner Medical Center

The massive Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center hospital tower has a name.

The nearly $2 billion, 26-story, 820-bed skyscraper will be the new “University Hospital” when it opens in early 2026, according to an internal memo obtained by The Dispatch.

Once open, it will physically connect to the current James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute. It will also replace aging facilities and expand care. The hospital’s top three floors will be dedicated to women’s care, labor and delivery, with 51 neonatal intensive care beds in partnership with Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

In the internal memo, the health system told employees “… the name University Hospital currently represents the care provided in Rhodes and Doan halls. It’s our recognized brand. It’s how the community knows us. So it’s a clear choice as the name for the new hospital tower…”

The internal memo described the tower as a “dramatic expansion of the services provided today in Rhodes and Doan halls as well as in the Brain and Spine Hospital.”

All name changes, according to the internal memo, will be not be until effective Feb. 22, 2026. That includes the tower’s naming, as well as some other facility name and road name changes:

OSU Wexner Medical Center declined a request seeking additional comment.
