The Ohio State men’s hockey team’s unlikely Big Ten Tournament run came to an end at the hands of rival Michigan on March 21.
OSU, as the No. 5 seed, was the lowest-seeded team to make the championship game. Against the No. 2-seeded Wolverines, the Buckeyes came up short 7-3 at Yost Arena in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Michigan had seven different goal-scorers. In addition to his goal, T.J. Hughes added two assists.
William Smith, Jake Karabela and Adam Eisele all scored in the loss. Smith’s and Eisele’s goals came on the power play, and Eisele’s tally gave OSU a 3-2 lead in the second period. The game was tied entering the third.
Ohio State had beaten No. 4 seed Wisconsin 7-1 in the quarterfinals before upending No. 1 Michigan State 3-2 in overtime in the semifinals.
This was the Buckeyes’ fourth trip to the title game. They lost the previous three in OT.
