A Crestline man accused of murdering his parents now faces five more felonies alleging assaults on sheriff’s deputies and corrections officers.
Maxwell Lindsey Anatra, 24, has been in the Crawford County Justice Center since Nov. 26, where he is being held in lieu of a $1 million bond.
He was arraigned Dec. 3 on 11 felonies and, on Jan. 14, his defense attorney, James J. Mayer III, asked that Anatra have a mental-health evaluation.
By Jan. 27, a Crawford County grand jury had reviewed Anatra’s new charges and agreed with all counts, according to a copy of the indictment provided by Crawford County Prosecutor Matt Crall.
Anatra now faces four fifth-degree felony assault charges, one fourth-degree felony assault charge and one first-degree misdemeanor for aggravated menacing.
‘Stated he has killed people’
The man’s latest indictment outlined two incidents at the jail, one on Jan. 2 and another Jan. 17.
During the Jan. 2 encounter, Anatra was charged with assaulting four people: two sheriff’s deputies and two corrections officers.
At some point during the altercation, the indictment alleged, Anatra verbally attacked Kasey Barnett, a sheriff’s deputy, which led to the charge of aggravated menacing.
The indictment noted that Anatra “did knowingly cause Dep. Kasey Barnett to believe that Maxwell Lindsey Anatra will cause serious physical harm to Dep. Kasey Barnett (to-wit: stated he has killed people and he would slaughter Dep. Kasey Barnett also).”
During the Jan. 17 incident, the indictment stated Anatra assaulted another corrections officer.
Anatra faces two life sentences, plus another 61½ years
The county prosecutor believes that Anatra killed his parents, Matthew Lindsey Anatra, 63, and Lisa Renee Anatra, 61, on the night of Nov. 18.
The couple were found dead the next morning by officers from the Crestline Police Department. The woman’s body was inside the home. The man’s was in a detached garage.
The coroner’s report said both were “stabbed by another person multiple times.”
In that case, Anatra faces two counts of aggravated murder, two counts of murder, four counts of aggravated burglary, two counts of theft of a firearm and one count of tampering with evidence.
If convicted of all charges, the 24-year-old could receive two life sentences in prison, plus another 61½ years.
Anatra’s mental-health evaluation must be completed before his case goes any further.
