Former Notre Dame head coach and college football analyst Lou Holtz took another shot at Ryan Day and the Ohio State Buckeyes this morning. Holtz and Day had some beef a few years ago when he claimed Ohio State wasn’t tough enough a couple of years ago to beat Notre Dame. After Ohio State did just that by beating the Irish, and Day confirmed this Buckeyes team was tough and asked on the postgame broadcast where Holtz actually was.
This morning, Holtz reignited the beef with Day, claiming Ohio State isn’t a great football team.
“You remember me telling you, I don’t think Ohio State’s a great football team,” Holtz told Dan Dakich of Outkick. “I know the schedule is very, very good, but when you’re at home and you’re outgained by well over 100 yards, you just can’t look at it and say, ‘Okay, we’re great. We won the game.’ They are 1-0 and that’s the objective they had going in that game, but they’re not a great football team.
“I would not be overwhelmed about facing Ohio State, although I was surprised that they lost Knowles, their defensive coordinator, I thought there’d be a big drop off on their defense, but Ohio State’s defense played outstanding football. So I think we’ll have to see how good Michigan is. We’ll have to see how good other teams are.”
Holtz believes that even though the Buckeyes knocked off the No. 1 Longhorns, they were outgained in yards and simply are not a great football team in his eyes. It is a bit bizarre to see an almost 90-year-old Holtz continue to go after Ryan Day, but that’s the beauty of the gripe between these two.
Ryan Day and the Buckeyes will look to silence Holtz and the doubters this weekend and beyond as Ohio State hopes to win back-to-back College Football Playoff national championships.
