Wyoming 24, Ross 21

A regular season winning streak doesn’t just disappear when playing the Wyoming Cowboys. After having their record 73-game regular season streak snapped in 2023, the Cowboys started anew and entered last night on an 11-game heater. Ross nearly wiped that clean.

Two touchdowns from Lucas Kunkel and a third from Carter Gipson had the Ross Rams leading Wyoming 21-7 in the fourth quarter. In the final 9:30 of the game, Wyoming shifted back into form.

Jackson Hamilton scored on a one-yard run with 9:30 left to make it a one-score game. Ross followed up two minutes later with a fumbled punt which Cameron Maupin recovered for a touchdown and a 21-21 game. The game winner came with just eight ticks left on the clock when freshman kicker C.J. Woodside drilled a 34-yard field goal for the 24-21 comeback win.

Wyoming quarterback David Dupee was 12-for-25 for 187 yards and a pick through the air, but ran for 43 yards and a score. Hamilton had 40 yards with his touchdown. Ross had 228 yards on the ground, including 134 from Gipson who also had 53 passing yards on Ross’ only completion of the night. Kunkel had 96 yards with two touchdowns.

Five different Panthers had sacks, which helped limit Princeton transfer and Mason quarterback De’Angelo Birch to a 6-for-19 night for 44 yards. Birch did lead the Comets in rushing with 37 yards. Fairfield trailed 23-10 in the beginning of the fourth quarter, but quickly cut Wayne’s lead to 23-17 with a Mason Thomas touchdown. Almost five minutes later, Fairfield took a 24-23 lead on a 35-yard run by Corrious Booker. The Indians needed to hold off Wayne, but quickly gave way again. Cam Taylor caught two passes all night from senior quarterback Jackson Frey, both resulting in the only St. Xavier scores of the game. Frey, who was 9-for-17 for 126 yards, hit Taylor from 31 yards for the game’s first score. Tied 7-7 in the final minute of the third quarter, Taylor hauled in a 16-yarder that would prove to be the game winner.

Lakota West sent the game to halftime with a 7-7 stalemate after Jackson Smith found Tyson Davis on a 12-yard pass with 3:58 left in the second quarter. The Firebirds won the possession game, holding onto the ball for nearly 33 minutes to St.Xavier’s 24, but the Bombers chewed up the final minutes of the clock in the fourth quarter.

The big names on defense did their jobs as Illinois commit Cam Thomas led the Firebirds with nine tackles, including three for a loss and a sack. Northwestern commit Brayden Reilly had an interception and seven tackles while Notre Dame commit Kobe Clapper had nine tackles (two for a loss).
