Light Up Downtown brings 14 blocks of holiday festivities to Canton

CANTON – Reindeer, a visit by Santa and sleigh rides are just a few of the festivities coming to the city for Light Up Downtown.

The annual holiday celebration returns Dec. 3 to Central Plaza and downtown Canton with 14 city blocks of attractions. Presented by the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce, the event runs from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. and is free to the public. 

Light Up Downtown, traditionally held on a Thursday, has been moved to Wednesday this year, said Kathy Lindenberger, the chamber’s event manager.

The Little Roaming Railroad will circle the Central Plaza Christmas tree, while horse and sleigh rides glide along Market Avenue S.

The 720 Market Village of Shops will host local vendors from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the DoubleTree by Hilton. Santa and Mrs. Claus will be present for greetings alongside a festive photo booth, musical entertainment and even live reindeer. There will also be a live nativity scene coordinated by Stephen Martyr Lutheran Church near the Salvation Army.

What’s the schedule for Light Up Downtown in Canton?

Here is a schedule of events: 

“I think Light Up Downtown is a great tradition, and we’re looking to continue this,” Sherer said. “It’s all about celebrating the holidays and having the chance for the residents of Canton to come down and celebrate the holidays and everything that Canton’s got to offer.” 

What roads will be closed for Light Up Downtown?

Parking will be available on surrounding streets, at the former Timken High School parking lot, Stark Library lot, City Centre Parking Deck, Millennium Center Parking Deck and the Cornerstone Parking Deck. 

Several streets will be closed for the event, starting at 3 p.m. and lasting until 8:30 p.m. Market Avenue from Tuscarawas Street to Fifth Street N will be closed at that time. Third, Fourth and Fifth streets will be closed from Court Avenue to Piedmont Avenue.  

At 4 p.m., Market from Tuscarawas to Sixth Street S will close. Second, Third, Fourth and Fifth streets from Court to Piedmont will be closed, as well. 

Tuscarawas from Piedmont to Cleveland Avenue will close at 5:30 p.m.
