Lake High School Athletic Director Brock Cline released a statement late Sunday, Oct. 19 updating the health status of Blue Streaks football player Justin Landes. The senior was seriously injured during a play in the third quarter of Lake’s win over Hoover on Friday, Oct. 17.
According to Cline’s statement, Landes was “evaluated on-site by sports medicine staff from both schools” before being transported to Akron Children’s Hospital by the Uniontown Fire Department.
Once at Akron Children’s, it was determined “Justin had sustained a laceration of his right kidney,” the statement said.
“On Saturday evening (Oct. 18), Justin underwent a successful surgery to address the laceration of the kidney and internal bleeding. During the operation, Justin’s surgical team identified an additional kidney laceration that could not be addressed during the procedure. He is currently hospitalized and in stable condition while his medial team continues to treat and evaluate the best course of action.”
Cline’s statement thanked Cleveland Clinic-Mercy Hospital Sports Medicine’s Dr. MarkHudak and the four athletic trainers — Hayley Simmons and Haley Kiko from Hoover, and Mariah Reeder and Erica Allen from Lake — “for their expeditious evaluation and care of Justin on Friday night.”
Cline’s statement also said: “The Landes family is grateful for the outpouring support, thoughts, and prayers over the last 48 hours.
