Former Cincinnati Reds great Joey Votto appeared on MLB Network’s “MLB Now” show July 22 with Brian Kenny, Bob Costas and Jake Peavy, and shared a sobering reminder with Reds fans that he wasn’t able to experience anything like the Boston Red Sox currently are encountering with their winning streak and turnaround.
“You have lived through this,” Kenny said to Votto. “How many times have you had something going south where you’ve been able to straighten things out, and know that you had a good club, and it actually happens?”
“Oooof! Zero times in my career,” Votto replied. “No. I didn’t have a good – my time in Cincinnati (included) no championships.”
“But still, you get to the playoffs,” Kenny responded. “You win 97 games. That means something.”
“But we didn’t come back from anything,” Votto answered. “You’re asking about building momentum from coming from behind. And I have no examples.”
In a video shared by @MLBNetworkPR, Votto explained why he enjoys talking baseball with Kenny:
In June, Votto revealed during an appearance on “MLB Now” his pick for best right-handed hitter in MLB history was Frank Thomas, and he mentioned the Athletics’ Nick Kurtz’s impressive .423 on-base percentage in the same sentence as Thomas, Aaron Judge and Jeff Bagwell during a comparison of Kurtz and the Houston Astros’ Yordan Álvarez.
On June 18, Votto talked about naming his dog Morgan after National Baseball Hall of Famer and former Reds great Joe Morgan on “MLB Now.”
Votto appeared earlier in June on MLB Network’s “MLB Now” with Kenny and Reds Hall of Famer Sean Casey, and Votto talked about the analytics specialist he hired in 2015 to map pitchers’ stuff, umpire tendencies and more in an effort to better control the strike zone.
