WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Elly De La Cruz has struggled much of the second half this season. But that didn’t stop the Cincinnati Reds shortstop from making history again Sept. 12 against the Athletics on the west coast.
After his second-inning single put runners at the corners in the third inning, De La Cruz stole second.
It was his 35th steal of the season, making him the fourth MLB player in the so-called modern (post-1900) era to reach that mark in each of his first three seasons.
He joins Delino DeShields (1990-92), Vince Coleman (1985-87) and Bert Daniels (1910-12).
De La Cruz becomes the first to do it since step-off limits were instituted and the bases were enlarged the year he debuted in 2023.
The two-time All-Star also did it all three years of his career despite playing less than four months as a rookie. He debuted June 6 that year.
De La Cruz, who led the majors with 67 steals last year is 35-for-42 (83%) on steal attempts this year.
