Graham Nash concert latest casualty in Madison Theater saga

Fans who bought tickets to see Graham Nash at Madison Theater in Covington won’t get the chance to hear the folk rock musician play locally this summer.

The concert scheduled for July 28 has been canceled due to an ongoing management transition and permitting challenges at the historic venue.

“Unfortunately, there was insufficient time to prepare the venue to host the concert, including obtaining the permits necessary to restore operations before Graham Nash’s performance,” a news release about the cancellation said.

The Madison Theater announced its sudden closure June 19, though, longtime owner Lillian Esther Johnson later said the theater will open again soon under new management.

Automatic refunds for ticket holders

Tickets purchased through TicketWeb will be refunded automatically, and no further action is required from ticket holders.

“We sincerely apologize to everyone who purchased tickets, as well as to Graham Nash, his agents, and his management team, for this disappointing outcome,” the news release said. “We appreciate their patience, understanding, and support as the Madison Theater and its new management prepare for reopening.”

Madison Theater expected to reopen under new management after confusion

The venue’s former programming director, Frank Hulefeld, posted online June 19 that the theater was suddenly and permanently closing after the loss of its business insurance following an injury claim. On Nov. 1, 2024, a woman fell down a set of stairs at the Madison Theater and later filed a lawsuit, according to court filings.

Johnson told the Enquirer she was not contacted about the insurance loss by Hulefeld and decided to terminate his lease and look for new management to keep the theater operating.

“The theater just means so much to so many people, not just me,” Johnson said. “I’m only interested in keeping it as a venue.”

She said in June that she was working on getting the liquor license transferred to new management.

Johnson owns the theater through ENC Properties LLC.
