Erik Gimbel Big Band performance headlines Area Happenings

Senior Art and Design Exhibition, now through Saturday, at Ashland University’s Coburn Gallery in the Center for the Arts. Exhibit will feature the capstone experiences for graduating AU art and design students.

Senior and Law Enforcement Together, 10 a.m. Thursday, Sheriff’s Annex building, 1205 E Main Street, Ashland. All seniors are welcome to attend this monthly meeting.  For the May meeting, Sara Fisher from the Ashland Historical Society will be our guest speaker, talking about the “Under Ground Railroad.” At this meeting, you will have opportunities to socialize with other seniors, law enforcement and ask questions. If you have any questions about these meetings, please call the Sheriff’s Office at 419-289-1501.

Erik Gimbel Big Band to Play Ashland Jazz Society, 7 p.m. Monday, May 11, King Road Christian Church at 1425 King Road in Ashland. The Big Bands and All That Jazz Society of Ashland will host their season finale with the Erik Gimbel Big Band. A band composed of some of the finest jazz players in the state, they will present concert consisting of something for everyone featuring the best in big band jazz writing. The concert, as always, is free and open to the public.  Donations are accepted, and memberships are available.

Color Fun 1 mile Walk & 5K Fun Run, 9:30 a.m. Saturday, May 16, Freer Field 1264 Center St., Ashland. Raise $25 in donations and you will receive an FFM Color Fun T-shirt to show off the colorful powderthrown from the color stations along the route. Strollers & wheelchairs are welcome. Swiss Steak Dinner, 4-6 p.m. Saturday, May 16, Beach City American Legion Hall Post 549, 125, 3rd Avenue. Drive-thru Carry-Out only. Meal includes three bean salad, applesauce, mashed potatoes/ homemade gravy, corn, bread and dessert for the cost of $14. Quart size three bean salad will be available for purchase. The Ladies Auxiliary will have Poppies available also.

Ashland Cancer Crusaders Relay For Life event, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. Saturday, June 20, Ashland County Fairgrounds. This annual event raises money for the American Cancer Society and the fight against cancer. Activities during the event will include a car show and a cornhole tournament starting at 11:00 with both registrations beginning at 10:00. A silent auction will be from 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. and a vendor show will also be ongoing during the entire time. There will also be food trucks.
