Countywide Landfill catches fire, blaze described as contained

EAST SPARTA − Village firefighters on Feb. 28 were battling a blaze at Republic Services Countywide Recycling & Disposal Facility & Landfilll.

According to a Facebook post, the fire broke out at the solid-waste disposal facility on Gracemont Street SW around 1:30 p.m. The fire was described as confined.

The East Sparta Fire Department received a mutual aid tanker shuttle from the Mohawk Valley Joint Fire District.

Employees at the landfill also were reported to be on the scene using heavy equipment to help keep the fire contained.

Residents are asked to avoid the area. There are no known injuries.

A company spokesperson not be reached for comment.
