The Crew fell to New York City FC 3-2 on the road despite holding two separate leads during the matchup on Sept. 17.
Going into second-half stoppage time, the score was tied 2-2, but midfielder Julian Fernandez flipped the game in New York’s favor with a shot from the top-right corner of Columbus’ box that he launched past goalkeeper Patrick Schulte.
Fernandez’s goal marked the first time New York was in control of the scoreboard. The Crew had pulled ahead in the 37th minute, when forward Daniel Gazdag scored on a penalty kick that was awarded after striker Wessam Abou Ali was fouled in New York’s box.
The Crew looked to go into halftime with a one-goal lead, but allowed midfielder Hannes Wolf to score off a rebound three minutes into first-half stoppage time.
The Crew regained the advantage when Abou Ali scored a header off a pass from midfielder Max Arfsten at the 60-minute mark.
Wolf struck again 13 minutes after Abou Ali’s goal, converting on a high-kick shot attempt.
The resulting 2-2 tie held for 21 minutes until Fernandez scored, with the final whistle blowing a minute after the goal.
The Crew were without team-leading scorer Diego Rossi for the first time this season due to Rossi suffering a hamstring injury against Atlanta United on Sept. 13.
