Cincinnati mayoral debate poised to test Pureval's record and Bowman's vision

With just weeks before voters head to the polls, the Cincinnati mayoral race is set for its biggest moment: a live, in-person debate on Thursday, Oct. 9, hosted by The Enquirer in partnership with Xavier University and the Ohio Debate Commission. Incumbent Mayor Aftab Pureval and challenger Cory Bowman will meet on stage from 8 to 9 p.m. at Xavier University’s James & Caroline Duff Banquet Center. The event is free and open to the public, but requires a ticket.

A race that has changed since the primary

Four months ago, Pureval looked unbeatable. He captured 82% of the May primary vote, leaving Bowman with just 13% and third-place finisher Brian Frank with 5%. But the political landscape has shifted. A spate of violent incidents − including a downtown business owner’s fatal stabbing in his own home and a viral street fight that drew national scrutiny − has put City Hall under pressure.

Republican leaders at the federal level have demanded action, warning Cincinnati could risk federal funding or even the deployment of the National Guard, as President Donald Trump recently did in Washington, D.C.

Meanwhile, Pureval and City Council have taken heat for ignoring resident opposition to a Hyde Park Square zoning change, feeding a narrative that city leadership is out of touch.

Pureval defends record; Bowman aims to ‘Flip the Nati’

Although Cincinnati’s elections are technically nonpartisan, Bowman is hoping to become the city’s first Republican mayor in more than half a century. A College Hill resident, West End pastor, and coffee shop owner, Bowman is also Vice President J.D. Vance’s half-brother, giving the race a national political hook.

Bowman insists his “Flip the Nati” slogan is about more than party labels.

“The most important aspect of local government is ensuring people have a choice,” he said. “This debate is an opportunity to show voters why I believe I’m the best candidate to lead our great city through practical plans and processes.”

Pureval, 42, a Democrat and former Hamilton County Clerk of Courts, remains confident.

“I’m incredibly proud of the work we’ve done to make Cincinnati a more vibrant and successful city for all our communities,” he said. “We have made tough decisions and forward-thinking investments to create a path to a safer, equitable, and prosperous community. Having civil debates is a cornerstone of our democracy, and I look forward to discussing these issues with Mr. Bowman.”

Why the debate matters

The Oct. 9 debate lands two days after early voting begins for the Nov. 4 election, ensuring it will help shape late-deciding voters’ opinions. With crime, development, and political dynamics all in play − and with Bowman’s family ties drawing national attention − this one-hour showdown offers Cincinnatians a chance to judge the candidates’ priorities and leadership styles side by side.

“In this era of polarization and the meme-ification of political messaging on social media, it’s nearly impossible for pragmatic voters to filter out the noise. Debates conducted by neutral third parties force candidates to go beyond their talking points and make their case for our support,” said Enquirer Executive Editor Beryl Love.
