As Ohio State University students get ready to move out of or into housing near the school’s campus, the City of Columbus is implementing about 50 temporary trash and recycling collection sites in the area beginning July 24.
The collection sites are hosted collaboratively with Ohio State University’s Office of Student Life and the University District Organization. Most of the collection sites are located in alleyways, parking lots and streets.
In addition to smaller household trash and recycling items, the sites will accept large items like furniture and mattresses through Aug. 11 ahead of the fall semester, which begins Aug. 24. Furniture in good shape may be donated.
Rochell Toth, community outreach and engagement manager at Ohio State’s Office of Student Life, said in a press release that the project aims to prevent illegal dumping and promote sustainability.
“Moving is an exciting time for students and we want to make it as easy as possible for them to be good neighbors throughout the process,” Toth said. “These convenient collection sites give students easy and responsible options for disposing of unwanted items, while helping keep the University District clean, reducing waste and supporting our shared commitment to sustainability.”
The project is being operated by the city’s Division of Refuse Collection, which also operates waste and reuse centers at 2100 Alum Creek Dr. and 1550 Georgesville Rd., where students can drop off additional items like food scraps and electronics.
