The Malone University men’s track and field team remain on top of the mountain in National Christian College Athletic Association national meets.
The Pioneers won their first NCCAA indoor national championship since 1999 on Saturday, Feb. 14 at Cedarville. The win comes on the heels of Malone winning an NCCAA outdoor national title last year.
The NCCAA named head coach Zach Fresenko and his staff the coaching staff of the year for men’s indoor track and field. It is the fifth coach of the year honor for Fresenko in his career.
Malone’s Phil Stupka won two events and was named the men’s track athlete of the meet. He set a school record in winning the 60-meter dash in 6.82 seconds and finished first in the 200 in 22.00.
Hayden Schmidt was a two-time NCCAA national champion. He won the mile in 4:19.48 and the 3,000 in 8:45.18. Tyler Twining also won an NCCAA title in the 800 in 1:57.10.
Allea Graves won three national titles for the Malone women’s team which finished third overall. She was named the women’s track athlete of the meet.
Graves tied a school record with a winning time of 7.73 seconds in the 60. She improved her school record in the 400 with a winning time of 56.55. She also won the 200 in 25.38 seconds.
