On the eve of early voting in Texas for the state’s 2026 March Republican and Democratic primaries, U.S. President Donald Trump doubled down on his backing of the Texas House speaker.
In a Truth Social post, Trump reiterated his endorsement of Texas state Rep. Dustin Burrows, R-Lubbock, for re-election.
“Dustin Burrows is a True Warrior for Republicans, and is doing a fantastic job as Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives!” reads the post.
For context, Trump first endorsed Burrows for re-election for his Texas State House District 83 seat back in July of 2025.
Trump said the reasoning for his strengthened endorsement stems from Burrows’ leadership in the Texas House when it passed its redistricting map that has the potential to give Republicans five more seats in Congress.
“As Speaker, Dustin is fighting tirelessly to Grow our Economy, Lower Taxes, Cut Regulations, Promote MADE IN THE U.S.A., Advance American Energy DOMINANCE by helping to keep the price of Gasoline, Oil, and all forms of Energy VERY LOW, Continue to Secure our already Secure Border, Champion School Choice, Support our Military/Veterans, and Defend our always under siege Second Amendment,” reads the post.
Trump ended his post by saying Burrows has his “complete and total” endorsement for re-election as speaker and Texas House District 83.
For further context, Texas voters in HD 83 will have the opportunity to re-elect Burrows to the House. Burrows is currently running unopposed in the March Republican Primaries but is set to face a Democratic challenger in the November General Election.
If re-elected, it will be Burrows’ fellow state representatives who will choose who will become the new speaker of the Texas House or re-elect Burrows for the duration of the 90th Texas Legislative session.
After receiving Trump’s second endorsement, Burrows took to social media expressing his sentiments.
“I appreciate President Trump reminding everyone of his strong endorsement. He is truly one of the greatest leaders in our country’s history!” reads the post. “This session, the Texas legislature advanced historic conservative priorities ensuring Texas remains a leader in our country and the free world; and, I look forward to continuing to work with our President to secure further wins for Texas families, communities, and job creators.”
Who is Dustin Burrows of Texas?
Burrows was first elected in 2014 to serve as the state representative for House District 83, which encompasses Borden, Crosby, Dickens, Floyd, Garza, Kent, part of Lubbock, Lynn, Mitchell, Scurry and Terry counties.
He is a Lubbock-based attorney and got started in elected Texas politics when he threw his name in the ring for a special election to replace then-Rep. Charles Perry when Perry successfully ran for the State Senate to replace then-Sen. Robert Duncan, who vacated his seat to become Chancellor at Texas Tech University.
Since then, Burrows has served in five consecutive sessions of the Texas Legislature, having been chairman of the House Calendars Committee and serving on the Panhandle Wildfires Committee during the 88th Legislative Session.
In January 2025, as the House gaveled in for the 89th Texas Legislative session, Burrows was one of the few state representatives vying for the speakership, which led to a contentious race. Burrows was ultimately successful in securing the speakership through a bipartisan effort.
While navigating Texas politics as one of its leaders, a fellow representative from his own party led a coup to oust Burrows as speaker.
What are recent issues Burrows has championed?
Burrows has advocated for school vouchers, writing an opinion column for the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal in October 2024 detailing his stance on the hotly debated topic in Texas. The Texas school voucher system ultimately passed under Burrows’ House leadership in 2025.
Other notable items that passed under his speakership include Texas’ redistricted map and policy reform that stemmed from the deadly Texas Mystic Camp flood.
Prior to his speakership, Burrows was and still remains a champion of higher education in Texas, serving its respective committee and being a driving force behind establishing the $4 billion Texas University Fund during the last session.
It was also during the 88th session that Burrows was the author of the “Texas Regulatory Consistency Act” — House Bill 2127 — more commonly referred to as the “Death Star Bill.”
The bill was designed to rein in city and county government control across the state. Burrows told the Avalanche-Journal earlier in 2023 that he introduced it because he wanted to see consistency in rules across municipalities in the state.
Burrows also advocated for Lubbock to become a Sanctuary City for the Unborn in 2021, making it illegal to have an abortion within the city limits.
