Cats bite firefighter, tenant pulling felines safely out of burning Canton house

CANTON ‒ A firefighter went to a hospital after being bitten by a cat rescued from a house that caught fire on July 23.

Canton Fire Department Battalion Chief Eric Ohman said the son of the tenant of the house at 1713 Clarendon Ave. SW was also bitten by a feline he was removing from the home.

Several cats were saved from the fire, which was reported at 7:35 p.m. Firefighters arrived three minutes later to find the occupants outside, smoke throughout the house and fire in the kitchen. The fire was under control in 10 minutes.

The blaze apparently started on the stove, but the resident said she had not used the appliance in a year, Ohman said.

The fire remains under investigation.
