Bucyrus councilman resigns during meeting; Republicans to name interim

Robert Taylor has resigned from Bucyrus City Council.

Voters elected Taylor, a Republican, in November 2025. His term began Jan. 1, 2026, and will expire Dec. 31, 2027.

During a regular Bucyrus City Council meeting June 2, Taylor spoke for a moment about promoting Bucyrus to the outside world, then asked Kevin Myers, president of Bucyrus City Council, for permission to the stand at the podium “as a private citizen.”

“You can go,” Myers said. “You’re excused.”

The man then left his seat.

“With a lot of regret and disappointment, I will announce my resignation as council-at-large for the city of Bucyrus,” Taylor said.

‘These a–h—- that live in this community’

Taylor, a Marine veteran, thanked the auditor for helping him learn city government, saying he had “a newfound respect for local elected officials.”

“I realize how hard this is, especially when you have to deal with these a–h—- that live in this community,” Taylor said. “You have to deal with the willing ignorance of the public.”

He wants to protect his family, especially his daughter and grandchildren, from public threats. He said other Bucyrus officials have suffered “harassment and bullying” from the public for several years.

He said his decision largely hinged on a video that has circulated on social media the past several days.

“In that video, there were numerous what I perceive as threats,” Taylor said. “Threats to expose the real Robert Taylor and all my 20 years of transgressions.”

He said he wants to be free to respond to those threats “without causing punitive damage to the city.”

“I do not want to do that to the taxpayers,” Taylor said. “When I do respond to these threats, the sole responsibility of the repercussions will fall squarely on my shoulders.”

Once he finished speaking, Taylor left the meeting and walked out of the building.

‘There will be a special election’

Taylor’s resignation may have been public, but the council president said it was not official.

“Up until the point where he notifies the board of elections and the Republican Central Committee, he is technically still serving as an elected official,” Myers said.

After Taylor submits his official resignation to elections staff, his party can name an interim replacement.

“They will name a temporary replacement,” Myers said. “There will be a special election then because his term was not half over.”

The council president told the Telegraph-Forum that Taylor’s resignation was “unexpected.”

“I didn’t see it coming,” Myers said. “But I understand completely where he’s coming from.”

Council’s goal at the beginning of the year was for residents and officials to “work together.”

“It’s been a long time since we’ve seen a truly cohesive city government where everybody was working together for the same common goal,” Myers said. “We’ve had different factions, if you will, of people that have different agendas and different priorities, and we’ve not been able to work well as a cohesive team.”
