Every person who speaks on Cleveland’s trade of Myles Garrett to the Los Angeles Rams prefaces it by saying that Jared Verse is not, and will not be Myles Garrett. Garrett is in a world of his own, and Verse could never touch that level.
While I tend to believe that, the line is becoming more and more blurred as more information begins to come out. These two guys are eerily similar.
From a size perspective, they are nearly carbon copies of each other. They both stand at 6’4,”, with Myles having a bit of the advantage in weight, with about a 10-pound edge on Verse. The comparisons get even more interesting.
According to NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah, in the last 10 years, there have only been two players to have 33-plus inch arms, hit over 30 reps on the bench press, and run sub 4.65 forty yard dash. If you guessed that those two players were Myles Garrett and Jared Verse.
However, Verse has the edge here. Garrett clocked the laser timer at 4.64 while Verse registered a 4.58.
In their first two seasons, the only category in which Garrett has over Verse is sacks. Verse only has 12.5 sacks to his name, while Garrett had 20.5. Other than that, Verse has better numbers everywhere else. He has more tackles, more tackles for loss, and the same amount of quarterback pressures.
This situation between the Browns and the Rams is one of the rare win-win situations. Both teams added a player who will help them immediately. The Rams will have a bunch of signature sacks from number 95 in high-leverage situations, while the Browns have a piece for now and their future with three draft picks and Verse.
The sentiment around Cleveland is growing for Verse. At first, because he was the piece on the other side of the deal that traded the best player ever in Cleveland’s history, there was a natural angst. However, as more information comes out about how good Verse is and what he could be in Cleveland, it is very real that the Browns traded for a mini Myles Garrett along with three additional draft picks in exchange for Myles Garrett.
Maybe it doesn’t pan out quite like that, but Verse maybe doens’t compare apples to apples with the current version of Garrett, but year two Garrett? Verse and that version of the future star are not all that different from each other.
