With the NFL draft just days away, the Cleveland Browns are signaling that they are open for business.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, “the Browns are already taking calls about the No. 6 pick, and sources said they’re open to moving it.” This potential pivot comes as Cleveland navigates a desperate need for offensive help in a draft class that many scouts believe is devoid of truly elite, “can’t-miss” talents at multiple positions of need for the Browns.
By moving back, the Browns are looking for more bites at the apple to build a more complete offensive unit.
A primary trade candidate frequently mentioned by front office executives is the Dallas Cowboys, who are reportedly hungry for a blue-chip defensive anchor. “A potential trade-up candidate in the eyes of some front office executives is the Cowboys,” Schefter noted, adding that Dallas is searching for a “big-time defensive player.”
While the Cowboys reportedly want to hold onto their 20th overall selection the 12th is still in the cards. A jump to six using that pick would allow them to snag a defensive powerhouse like David Bailey, Sonny Styles, or Caleb Downs.
As usual for Cleveland, the motivation is purely mathematical.
As Schefter explains, “another move back would give the Browns more capital in a draft in which they are already scheduled to have nine picks, including Nos. 6 and 24 in the first round.”
Relinquishing a top-ten spot could be the key to maximizing value in a “weak” draft class and help build a offensive foundation of players on cheap rookie deals heading into the second half of the decade.
Whether the Browns stand pat or execute a blockbuster trade, Andrew Berry’s history suggests he won’t hesitate to pull the trigger if the value is right. As the draft clock nears, the phone lines in Berea remain wide open.
