Brendan Sorsby's realistic worth after this saga comes to a close

The conversation around Brendan Sorsby has become fairly explosive over the past couple of weeks, and rightfully so. After the betting scandal broke at the end of April, the only conversation that has floated around the quarterback is how bad the betting situation is.

There is plenty out there covering the severity of that situation. Now that Sorsby has committed to the NFL’s Supplemental Draft and is officially leaving college football, who is he as a quarterback?

Sorsby is a career 61 percent thrower over four years and three seasons playing. He played in 10 games as a redshirt freshman before transferring to Cincinnati for the final two years of his career. In 2024, he threw for 2,813 yards, 18 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. Fine numbers for a quarterback that has found himself in “first round” conversations.

In what turned out to be his final season in college football in 2025, Sorsby threw for 2,800 yards, 27 touchdowns, and five interceptions. Again, from a numbers perspective, he was just fine.

Some of the things that stand out from his game are that he plays with a fearless mindset. There isn’t a throw on the field that he doesn’t believe that his arm can’t make, and while that is a valuable mindset, it also can get you in trouble.

Mechanically, he is a smooth thrower of the football. The ball does truly jump out of his hand, and he can touch every part of the field, which will be attractive at the NFL level. However, his game does require some work on his footwork.

He is a player who is a victim of the modern college football game. His footwork is sloppy, and he relies too much on his athleticism to make plays. This is something that worked at Cincinnati, but it is not something that he will be able to get away with in the pros.

While understanding that this is a very incomplete analysis of the quarterback, it describes the current state of his game fairly well. He is a gunslinger who has some work to do with his feet, has a 14-21 career record, and he brings a lot of baggage along with him.

If Cleveland is truly interested in him, they will be competing with the typical subjects. Teams like New York Jets, Miami Dolphins, Arizona Cardinals, and maybe a team like Minnesota, which is unsettled at the position.

If Cleveland is convinced that Sorsby is their potential future, then the most expensive pick I would exchange in the Supplemental Draft would be a second overall pick. The smart decision would be for the Browns to bid a third-round pick, and that being the max.

I’m not totally sold on Sorsby as the player, especially if there are going to be some punishments handed out by the league, which there might be. The lack of winning in college, especially in the Big 12, holds a lot of weight for me.

The Browns need to be very smart about this and make a well-educated decision. They have been known to be impulsive in these scenarios in the past. Hopefully, this time is different than all of the rest.
