If you’re looking for easy access to tools for monitoring blood pressure, Akron-area libraries have a new helpful initiative.
Five new blood pressure hubs have been installed at Akron-Summit County Public Library locations as part of its “Libraries with Heart” initiative.
The hubs, created by the American Heart Association, include access to a blood pressure monitor, materials on how to measure blood pressure, resources on what different numbers mean and a contact list of medical providers for those who need follow-up, according to a news release.
“We are meeting people where they are to ensure everyone has the chance at their longest, healthiest life,” Gabbi Roszman, community impact director for the American Heart Association in Northeast Ohio, said in the release. “Where you live shouldn’t determine how long you live. These new hubs will give everyone in our community access to know their numbers and take control of their health.”
Hubs are located at the Akron-Summit County Public Library’s main library and branches in North Hill, northwest Akron, Odom Boulevard and Portage Lakes.
Almost half of U.S. adults have high blood pressure
Many adults with high blood pressure don’t know they have it, according to the release. But almost half of U.S. adults experience it.
High blood pressure often doesn’t have symptoms, so it can go undetected until serious health issues arise, the release said.
It is a leading risk factor for heart disease and stroke.
The best way to know if you have a healthy blood pressure is to get it checked, the release said.
“Blood pressure screening machines enable early detection of hypertension, a silent but dangerous condition,” Patrick Manning, neighborhood services manager for the library system, said in the release. “This allows individuals to take charge of their cardiovascular health before a crisis occurs.”
