Alliance-area news in brief for July 25

WINONA AIRSHIPS – Winona Area Historical Society will feature 100 years of airships in Ohio with an event at 2 p.m. Aug. 10 at the 1895 Meeting House in Winona. The program, “Tragedy To Triumph-100 Years of Airships in Ohio,” will focus on the Ohio crash of the USS Shenandoah in September 1925, as well as the 100th anniversary of the Ohio Goodyear Airship Operations. Author and guest speaker Aaron Keirns will discuss the wreck of the Shenandoah, which was national news at the time; and the Goodyear Blimp airships that we all frequently see flying over Columbiana County. The free program will include refreshments! The event will include a random prize drawing for attendees. The 1895 meeting house is at 32114 Winona Road in Hanoverton.

ARTFEST SET AT MOUNT UNION – University of Mount Union has announced its 61st annual ArtFest for Oct. 4 at its historic location around the Campus Lakes. It will be in conjunction with the Carnation City Food Truck Rally and Mount Union’s football game against Otterbein. Early bird rate for vendors is $50, available through Aug. 15. Fees will increase to $75 for adults from Aug. 16 through Sept. 26. Vendor fees will be waived for junior vendors (ages 12-18) or collegiate (enrolled in college) vendors. Event registration on the day of the event is $150 per space. The Carnation City Food Truck Rally will run 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. along Simpson Street, west of Union Avenue. Vendor and Food Truck lists, along with current vendors and registration information, are available at mountunion.edu/artfest. Email questions to the ArtFest committee at artfest@mountunion.edu. Note: Mount Union announced a date change for this event to Oct. 4.

POLLINATOR GARDEN EVENT – Columbiana Women’s Club plans a discussion about pollinators called Buzzin’ about the Pollinator Garden at 12:30 p.m. Aug. 6 at Harvey S. Firestone Recreational Park, 338 E. Park Ave. in Columbiana. During the session, participants will explore garden art along with plants that support bees, butterflies, birds and beetles in the park’s Maple Grove Pavilion, at the Springfield Road entrance. A lunch option starts at noon for $15. The program only option is $10. RSVPs are required by calling 330-207-1470. Pay by cash or checks made payable to Columbiana Women’s Club, 121 N. Main, Columbiana OH 44408. Include the number of tickets and attendees for each program choice when sending in payment.

SEBRING COUNCIL − Sebring Village Council will meet at 6:30 p.m. July 28 in Council Chambers. Among items on the agenda are renewals of tax levies for Sebring Fire Department’s equipment, maintenance and buildings; and the village’s Parks and Recreation Department.
