Akron Zips softball opponent is LSU to open 2026 NCAA Tournament

Coming off its first Mid-American Conference Tournament title, the University of Akron softball team learned May 10 it will face LSU in the NCAA Tournament.

The Zips earned an automatic tournament berth by winning the MAC championship. LSU (37-17) received a No. 4 seed in the Baton Rouge Region from the NCAA Selection Committee during “Selection Sunday.” The teams will play in a first-round game in the double-elimination regional round at 6:30 p.m. Friday, May 15, in Baton Rouge, La.

The 16 national seeds selected by the NCAA will host the 16 regionals in the 64-team bracket. The super regionals — a three-game series that will determine the eight teams in the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City — will be hosted by the top eight seeded teams.

On May 9, Katie Cantrell’s two-run home run and Madie Jamrog’s complete game led No. 1 seed Akron to a 3-1 win over No. 6 seed Western Michigan University in the MAC tournament title game at Firestone Stadium.

The Zips (34-23) defeated WMU (29-26) for the second day in a row in the double-elimination tournament to win its first MAC Tournament title after winning its second MAC regular season crown last week.
