Michigan must strengthen, maintain its ties with Taiwan | Opinion

As global events feel turbulent, Michiganians need to have a direct focus on the forces that pose threats to our economic growth, national security and commitment to human rights. These threats are real, and they have been clearly demonstrated by the predations of China.

As co-chair of the Michigan House Taiwanese Friendship Caucus, I’m working to make sure that the relationship between the state of Michigan and Taiwan promotes shared economic development while curtailing Chinese ambitions of regional and international dominance.

China has become an increasingly aggressive force on the world stage, and our allies in Taiwan deserve clear demonstrations of support.

We’re taking action in Lansing. The Michigan House of Representatives adopted my resolution, HR 289, which declared April 21 as Michigan and Taiwan Partnership Appreciation Day. The day recognizes our shared commitment to democracy and freedom and emphasizes the need to protect these values in the face of Chinese aggression.

Our relationship with Taiwan stems not only from our commitment to human rights, but from our deep economic ties through trade and innovation as well.

In a time in which China is actively spreading its influence across the globe through large-scale economic initiatives, we can help protect Taiwanese independence by supporting our commercial relationship at the state level. The actions we take to maintain our economic partnership will provide regional stability.

Economic projects are of critical importance to national security as well. China has proven repeatedly that it seeks to gain a technological edge over the United States through intellectual property theft and the manipulation of public opinion. These moves are dangerous, and they must be combated with urgency.

Maintaining strong economic and diplomatic ties with Taiwan is an essential component for economic development and regional stability. Strengthening our relationship will remain critical to taking on future challenges in the years ahead.
