An Akron man is awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty in a Ravenna man’s drug overdose death more than two years ago.
Gene Arnall Hill, 43, pleaded guilty in Portage County Common Pleas Court on March 23 to first-degree felony involuntary manslaughter and fifth-degree felony trafficking in a fentanyl-related-compound, said Portage County Prosecutor Connie Lewandowski.
Sentencing is pending the court’s adult probation department completing a presentencing investigation and report.
Ravenna police said family members of 31-year-old Tyrece D. Luttrell reported he was overdosing at his Ravenna Avenue home on Jan. 19, 2024.
Officers administered three doses of Narcan and did chest compressions until EMS arrived and took over. Luttrell was then taken to University Hospitals Portage Medical Center, where he later died. The Portage County Coroner’s Office said the cause of death was ruled “fentanyl toxicity.”
Police said an investigation determined that Lutrell had a history of drug addiction, especially heroin, but was employed and in rehab and was not known to have used addictive substances in seven months. Luttrell’s girlfriend told police Luttrell had supported her in her own struggles to overcome meth addiction.
A warrant was issued for Hill’s arrest after investigators examined Luttrell’s phone.
In a plea deal, a second-degree felony of corrupting another with drugs charge was dismissed.
