The Columbus Division of Police is investigating after a 7-year-old boy got ahold of an unsecured gun and fatally shot himself on the city’s Northeast Side.
Columbus police responded to an unknown complaint in the 1500 block of Grandview Avenue just after 9 p.m. Oct. 26, Columbus police Sgt. Joe Albert, a spokesman for the Division of Police said in a release.
When they arrived, officers were told a 7-year-old boy gained access to an unsecured firearm. The gun went off, injuring him, Albert said.
The boy was pronounced dead by medics at 9:18 p.m., Albert said.
Police have not identified the boy who died.
Albert said the investigation is ongoing and the prosecutor’s office will determine whether charges will be filed.
