A Perrysburg man died when his Jeep was hit in a rollover accident at a Benton Township intersection by a Genoa man.
The Ohio Highway Patrol is investigating the two-vehicle crash that occurred on July 6 at 2:15 p.m. on Ohio 163 at Elliston Trowbridge Road in Benton Township, Ottawa County.
Joseph Hartford, 19, of Genoa, was driving south in a 2011 Chevrolet Malibu on Elliston Trowbridge Road. He failed to yield at a stop sign, hitting a 2017 Jeep Compass driven by Danny Avery, 60, of Perrysburg. Avery was traveling east on Ohio 163.
Both vehicles traveled off the right side of Ohio 163 and Avery’s Jeep overturned, ejecting him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Hartford was not injured in the crash.
Lt. Shawn Robinson from the Fremont post of the Highway Patrol said that weather did not appear to be a factor. Parts of Ottawa County were experiencing flooding conditions from heavy rains earlier in the day.
“The roadways were wet, and it was raining slightly, but the heavy, heavy stuff had passed by that point,” Robinson said. “We’re still trying to piece it all together. We will have to do some more digging, to get all the information here.”
Neither driver was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
The crash remains under investigation. No charges have been filed.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Clay Township Police Department, Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, Ohio Department of Transportation, Ottawa County Coroner’s Office, Benton-Carroll Fire and EMS and Greer’s Towing.
