Woman fatally stabbed, man shot during argument in Rochester

A woman was stabbed to death and a man was shot as the pair argued on Aug. 14 in northwest Rochester, according to police.

The fatal encounter occurred around 9:30 p.m. on Spencer Street. Multiple people called 911 to report the fight. Emergency responders arrived and found a woman in her 30s had been stabbed and a man in his 20s had been shot at least once, said Capt. Frank Umbrino of the Rochester Police Department.

Both the man and woman were taken to Strong Memorial Hospital, where the woman was pronounced dead, he said. The man suffered serious injuries and remained hospitalized. He was listed in critical condition as of early on Aug. 15, Umbrino said.

The pair, Umbrino said, was involved in an argument that escalated into a physical altercation. The man within the pair is accused of stabbing the woman, but as that occurred another person intervened and shot the man at least once, Umbrino said.

Spencer Street is several blocks north of Lyell Avenue and just west of Lake Avenue in Rochester.

The woman’s death marked Rochester’ 20th homicide of 2025, according to RPD’s Open Data Portal.

No charges have been filed in connection with the slaying. Officers continue to investigate the incident. Anyone with information or video is asked to call 911, RPD’s Major Crimes Unit at (585) 428-7157 or CrimeStoppers at (585) 423-9300.
