This year, an addition is being made to the lohud Girls Lacrosse Player of the Week poll, presented by White Plains Hospital.
As has been the long-time custom, The Journal News/lohud will continue to pick girls lacrosse all-stars for Westchester/Putnam and, separately, for Rockland County. This will include Player of the Year selections for both areas.
But we are also adding Readers’ Choice selections for Player of the Year.
They will not influence the newspaper’s selections but are in addition to them.
Below is the Rockland poll. Unlike the weekly polls, the coaches have not put players up for the awards. Those nominated were selected by lohud. And, while with the weekly polls, schools are limited to one nominee per week, in this instance, with All-American selection by coaches being prerequisite to be considered for the top awards, two Nyack and two Suffern players are the nominees.
As with the weekly online polls, this will close at 3 p.m. Wednesday. And, also as with the weekly polls, there are no limits on the number of times you may vote, nor on the number of players for whom you may vote.
Casey Cummings, Nyack
The junior gained All-American honors as a key cog in the RedHawks’ highly-charged offensive game. She poured in 59 goals, had 29 assists and beat opponents to 141 balls off the draw. Cummings, who has surpassed 200 goals for her career and who’s committed to play for Div. I Syracuse in 2027, had four goals and assisted on Kate Gould’s winning goal with 22 seconds left as Nyack edged defending-champion Rye 13-12 for the Section 1 Class C title.
Michaela Fay, Suffern
The junior, a two-time All-American who’s committed to play for Div. I University of Maryland, followed her 73-goal/22-assist sophomore season with another 73 goals and 33 assists as she helped lead Suffern to the state Class A title game. Quick and elusive, Fay played a key role in stopping a comeback by Huntington, notching her fourth goal of the game (a spectacularly athletic insurance goal with little more than a minute remaining) as Suffern won 11-9 in its state regional Class A final.
Kate Gould, Nyack
Arguably the heart of a very talented and nationally-ranked RedHawks team that captured the Section 1 Class C title on Gould’s last-minute, tie-breaking goal, the two-time All-American will play next year for Div. I Yale. This season, she scored 36 goals, had 57 assists and beat opponents to 82 balls off the draw. Blessed with great field vision, Gould is among the all-time assist leaders in Section 1 with more than 200 for her career. But she’s also recognized for her strong defensive game.
Jillian Terlizzi, Suffern
The Suffern netminder earned All-American honors for a second straight season by doing what she always does, using her quickness and good angles to stop half the shots she faced. She also kept opponents to single-digit scoring in 14 games. Both are no small feat given the limitations placed on defenders’ play and, in turn, the frequency with which space violations are called on defensemen, resulting in quasi free shots for shooters. Terlizzi will play next year for Div. I UConn.
