Who's the Baseball Player of the Week, presented by White Plains Hospital?

With the high school baseball season underway, this will be the first of many opportunities for readers to vote for lohud Baseball Player of the Week, presented by White Plains Hospital.

Coaches have nominated 12 players for the award.

Unlike in weeks going forward, this poll will cover two weeks, since some teams played March 23-29, but many didn’t start playing until March 30-April 5.

The players’ accomplishments are noted below. The poll will close at 3 p.m. Wednesday, April 8.

Justin Acevedo, Alexander Hamilton

The senior pitcher/third baseman is averaging two strikeouts an inning, having fanned 18 batters in nine innings, while yielding just two runs. At bat, he’s 4-for-9 with a double, triple, three walks and four runs batted in.

Nick Amador, Stepinac

The righty, who’s committed to pitch next year for Div. I Merrimack, struck out 10 in four innings, while giving up two hits and no runs to pick up a win over Salesian.

JP Donahoe, Mamaroneck

During the Tigers’ trip to Florida last week, the senior third baseman, hitting in the cleanup spot, batted .500, going 5-for-10 with two doubles and two RBI. He was also solid defensively in both games.

Johedy Frias, Riverside

Through two games, the freshman third baseman went 4-for-6 with three doubles.

Josh Goldman, Byram Hills

The senior righthander tossed six shutout innings to lead the Bobcats to a win over Bronxville. Goldman is unscored upon in 11 innings over two starts this season, issuing one walk and allowing eight hits, while striking out nine.

Kaleb Hetzel, Tappan Zee

The senior southpaw is hitting .563 with a double, two triples, a home run and seven RBI. On the mound, he’s 2-0 with a save. In 14 innings pitched, Hetzel has given up three hits and no runs and has struck out 16. Hitters are batting .070 against him.

Welinton Lopez, Pearl River

The senior righty yielded two hits over 9 2/3 innings in picking up two wins. Even more impressive, almost every out — 27 of 29 — he got via strikeout.

Nick Masciarelli, Mahopac

The senior righty has been dominant, not allowing a hit while picking up two wins. In 13 1/3 innings pitched, he has walked three and struck out 24, and also hit a two-run homer.

Luke Nargi, Westlake

The junior shortstop had a big week in Florida as the Wildcats picked up wins over Bronxville, Valhalla and Hastings. Over the three games, Nargi batted .556 with a walk, five hits, including a double, and nine RBI.

Matt Purvis, Nanuet

The senior has played a big part in Nanuet’s 3-1 start. On the mound, he’s 1-0 with a no decision, sparkling 1.75 ERA and 0.58 WHIP. Purvis went five innings with three earned runs and 10 strikeouts in a no-decision vs. Byram Hills before throwing a complete-game, seven-inning three-hitter with nine strikeouts, no walks and no earned runs in the Golden Knights’ 5-1 win over Nyack. He’s batting .333, going 5-for-15 with two doubles, a triple, a walk, three stolen bases and two RBI.

Jack Van Sise, Pleasantville

The senior catcher has been integral to the Panthers’ hot 5-0 start. In the two-week span, he hit .563 with three doubles, a homer and 11 RBI.

Andrew Zendel, Dobbs Ferry

The junior third baseman/pitcher is off to a torrid start at the plate, going 5-for-6 with a double, two runs scored and two RBI over two games. He also pitched four innings, allowing just one hit, one walk and one run, while striking out six to notch the win over Irvington.
