What is a fair contract extension for Jets DT Harrison Phillips?

The New York Jets have shown a willingness to sign in-house talents to contract extensions this offseason.

Running back Breece Hall got his extension after being franchise tagged, and more recently it was offensive lineman Joe Tippmann who signed a lucrative long-term deal.

It has since been speculated that defensive tackle Harrison Phillips could be next.

The Jets acquired Phillips in a trade with the Minnesota Vikings last offseason for 2026 and 2027 sixth-round picks. Phillips was immediately productive for Aaron Glenn’s defense, registering a career-high five tackles for loss and 60 total tackles (second-most in his career). Now, it’s clear the Jets should keep him around.

The Jets inherited an extension Phillips previously signed with the Vikings, a two-year deal worth $15 million. Phillips earns an average annual salary of $7 million, and the upcoming 2026 season is a contract year.

Now would be the time to negotiate an extension with the run-stuffing defensive tackle.

Phillips is 30, so the Jets would want to discuss a reasonable extension. A two-year deal in the neighborhood of $19 million sounds plausible. Phillips would earn a career-high $9.5 million per season while staying under contract through 2028. His 2025 performance deserves a pay-raise.

The Jets made a concentrated effort to get beefier across the defensive line this offseason. Phillips still fits Glenn’s new identity.

Holding discussions with Phillips over a reasonable extension would benefit all parties involved.
