Call them dot cakes, sprinkle cakes or cakes in a cup — the colorful, sprinkle-covered desserts have become a social media sensation.
DeCicco & Sons and Stew Leonard’s, which has a Yonkers store, are among the retailers jumping on the trend.
What are dot cakes?
Dot cakes — also called cakes in a cup — typically feature sponge cake layered with frosting and coated in nonpareil sprinkles.
USA Today reports videos featuring the treats have drawn hundreds of thousands of views across social media platforms, especially TikTok.
Local retailers join the trend
DeCicco & Sons is selling a dot cannoli and a dot cake.
“We took our traditional, crispy cannoli, filled it with our famous store-made cream, and dipped it in all-natural nonpareils,” the company said on Facebook. “It’s a literal party in a pastry shell.”
Stew Leonard’s is offering a sprinkle cake cup.
“Nothing makes us happier than seeing customers enjoy our Sprinkle Cake Cup!” the company said in a Facebook video. “Colorful and delicious.”
