The 137-year-old F.X. Matt Brewing Company in Utica received recognition at the United States Beer Tasting Championship this month.
Three of the brewery’s Saranac beers earned Best of the Mid-Atlantic honors in three categories:
“These wins are a testament to the creativity, consistency and dedication of our brewing team,” brewery President Fred Matt said in a statement. “We take great pride in crafting beers that deliver both exceptional flavor and memorable drinking experiences, and it’s truly rewarding to be recognized across such distinct categories.”
The 31st annual contest considered beers in 18 categories.
F.X. Matt has won other recent awards in the same championship, which takes place both in summer and in winter. Last summer it took three honors in the Mid-Atlantic competition: a win for Utica Club in the best premium American lager; an honorable mention (which is really the equivalent of second place) for Saranac Blueberry Blonde; and an honorable mention for Saranac Clouded Dream IPA in the hazy India pale ale category.
And in the winter championship in February, Saranac Black Forest Black won the dark lager/dunkel category in the Mid-Atlantic. And Gonzo Imperial Porter from the Flying Dog Brewery, which F.X. Matt bought in 2023, won the imperial stout category while Flying Dog’s Double Dog took an honorable mention in the barleywine category, both in the Mid-Atlantic.
Three F.X. Matt beverages also won medals at the 2025 U.S. Open Beer Championship in July: gold medals for Saranac Blueberry Blonde (in the American-style fruit beer, blueberry category) and for Saranac Root Beer (in the Root beer, B-adults, spiced category); and a silver medal for Utica Club Pilsener Lager (in the American-style lager category).
And F.X. Matt Brewing Company was ranked the 7th top craft brewery and the 17th top overall brewery in a national ranking by the Brewers Association’s annual U.S. Craft Brewing Industry Report in April.
