Steuben County family wins 'Free Groceries for Life' grand prize from Tops Monopoly game

June 25 was a day the McGlynn family won’t ever forget.

Tom McGlynn, of Bath, was named the winner of the 2025 Tops Monopoly Reimagined grand prize, Free Groceries for Life. And to top it off, the Town of Bath formally proclaimed June 25 as Tom McGlynn Day during a prize ceremony at the 309 West Morris Ave. store.

The prize marked the culmination of the 2025 Tops Monopoly Reimagined ticketless game that launched in March.

“We’ve been doing our shopping at Tops ever since they opened up here in Bath,” said McGlynn. “The kids were always doing the Monopoly stuff ever since they were little, sitting around the kitchen table doing it. I can’t thank everybody enough.”

McGlynn was joined by his wife, Stephanie, along with the couple’s children, grandchildren, parents and extended family.

Tops also offered the McGlynns the opportunity to pay it forward by conducting a three-minute shopping spree, with the bounty donated to a local charity of their choice, Catholic Charities of Steuben and Livingston County.

“Stephanie actually works right next door to them and she actually sees the great work they do over there and she’s reminded on a daily basis of the need that takes place in this community, but elsewhere as well,” said Andy Brocato, on hand from Tops headquarters in Williamsville. “She realizes how much Catholic Charities helps the folks here in Bath, New York.”

The Tops Monopoly program was reimagined in 2025 with shoppers earning over 75 million “Property Points” and almost $8 million in prizes and savings, the grocery store chain said.

Property Points were collected and redeemed for unlimited $10 Rewards Cards that could be used on future purchases. Every Property Point collected also entered customers for another chance to win $1,000 in free groceries and gas daily prizes, with 63 winners. Just one grand prize was awarded, with McGlynn taking home the Free Groceries for Life prize.

Brocato delivered the news to the family.

“They were floored. They thought I was crazy. They said this is amazing. They said holy — ah,” Brocato recalled, eliciting laughs from the crowd at the store. “I can’t believe we won free groceries, and they also said that it doesn’t happen to us. Well indeed today, this in fact has proven that it does happen to you. Thank you for shopping at Tops to make this happen.”
