Spirit Airlines shutdown: How to get a refund, rebook flights and find rescue fares

All Spirit Airlines flights were canceled early Saturday, May 2, stranding travelers nationwide. The struggling carrier said it is shutting down and grounding all planes after two years of failed mergers, two bankruptcies and rising jet fuel costs. The move follows the collapse of bailout talks with the White House and creditors.

“It is with great disappointment that on May 2, 2026, Spirit Airlines started an orderly wind-down of our operations, effective immediately,” the airline said on its website. “All flights have been canceled, and customer service is no longer available.”
