Sleepy Hollow named one of the top Halloween towns in the U.S.

It might be a no-brainer but this New York village has landed on a list for its love of all things spooky.

Westchester’s Sleepy Hollow has been named one of the best small towns for Halloween in America by Fodor’s Travel.

“Every October in tiny towns across the U.S., the spirit of Halloween gets turned up big time,” the travel and tourism publication said. “Creepy and kooky, mysterious and spooky, these little American towns do All Hallows’ Eve right.”

Here’s what to know.

Why Sleepy Hollow?

The village of Sleepy Hollow, which celebrated its 150th birthday last year, is located within the town of Mount Pleasant in Westchester.

One of its main attractions is the Old Dutch Church and its burying grounds. It became popular after Washington Irving’s story of The Headless Horseman in “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” was published in 1820 and Catriena Van Tassel, who became the character of Katrina Van Tassel in the book, is buried there.

During the month of October, visitors can experience a candlelight presentation of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” that includes a dramatic reading and live music as well as take a tour of the church and burying grounds.

“Step into the pages of Washington Irving’s “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” and see where the Headless Horseman galloped past tombstones with a pumpkin for a head,” Fodor’s Travel said of the village. “During the last weeks of October, Sleepy Hollow is buzzing with haunted hayrides, dramatic performances, parades, a glass pumpkin patch showcase, and fantastical displays of thousands of hand-carved pumpkins at The Great Jack O’ Lantern Blaze.”
