Sheriff identifies 78-year-old victim of fatal Wellsburg house fire

The identity of the person killed in a fatal house fire in the Village of Wellsburg on Friday, June 19, has been released by the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office.

The body of Willard E. Mann, 78, was discovered by firefighters within his 3605 Comfort Hill Road residence shortly after their arrival around 7 p.m. Friday, officials said. Mann was pronounced dead, and his body was removed from the scene.

Chemung County Sheriff William Schrom said an investigation into the origin of the fire was conducted by state and county fire investigators along with the Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division, who determined the blaze originated in the rear of the home in one of the appliances.

Deputies remained on the scene throughout the night until state and county fire investigators responded back to the scene of the fire Saturday morning to continue their investigation, Schrom said.
