HONEOYE FALLS – All roads lead to Binghamton.

At least for those bound for the New York state high school softball finals.

Just one team from Section V will compete when state quarterfinals are held on June 6 and 7. Four others saw their season end on Wednesday, June 3 in sub-regional play.

Quarterfinal winners will earn a trip to Binghamton’s Greenlight Networks Grand Slam Park, which will host NYSPHSAA semifinals on Friday, June 12, and finals on Saturday, June 13. See which team advanced to regionals, which fell short, and details on when Section V will compete.

Mercy falls short of another comeback win

Our Lady of Mercy (13-6) fell short of another comeback win when it fell to Section 6 champion Depew (12-7), 9-7, in a Class A sub-regional.

Four days after the Monarchs’ improbable, walk-off victory in the Section V final, they traded blows with Depew at Honeoye Falls-Lima High School. Mercy nearly tied the game in the bottom of the sixth inning, but Depew cut down the tying run at home plate on a squeeze play.

Abigail Bello went 4 for 4 for Mercy. Leah Sperry and Brenna Ray each added three hits while Lily Seiffert drove in three runs.

Mercy answered Depew’s four-run third inning with three tallies of its own, including two on a double by Rowan Hennessy. Depew, however, took the lead for good after scoring three runs in the fourth.

Top-ranked Oakfield-Alabama awaits Class D quarters

Section V Class D champion Oakfield-Alabama received a bye into Friday, June 5’s regionals. There, the Hornets will meet Section 6 champion Forestville (12-3).

O-A, the Class D1 champion, raced past D2 champ Avoca/Prattsburgh, 13-1, in Section V’s regional qualifier.

The New York State Sportswriter Association’s June 2 poll ranked the Hornets as the No. 1 Class D team in the state. Forestville was ranked sixth.

O-A and Forestville will meet at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, June 5 at Gates Chili High School. The winner will play either Cincinnatus (Section 3) or Hermon-DeKalb (Section 10) in the state semifinals.

R-H, Penfield among sub-regional victims

Penfield (20-3) fell to Section 6 representative Orchard Park (14-4), 8-5, in Class AA. Rush-Henrietta (14-9), meanwhile, dropped a 14-3 decision to Section 6’s Lancaster (13-5) in Class AAA.

Class B champion Avon (13-6) fell, 8-5, to Section 6’s Alden (17-1). That ends an improbable run for the Riverhawks which saw them begin the postseason seeded fifth in Section V Class B2.

Avon scored the game’s first five runs against Alden, including a three-run home run by Jessie Crye, who struck out 14 batters in the pitcher’s circle. Alden walked the game off, though, in the ninth inning.

Rylie Miller tallied three hits for Avon while Payton Rice and Charlie Pierce each logged two.

In Class C, Caledonia-Mumford (18-3) fell, 9-4, to Section 6 champ Falconer (18-3).

Shea Drazkowski logged two RBIs for Cal-Mum, which scored all four of its runs in the seventh inning. Emma Wysikiel and Colleen Talty added Cal-Mum hits in the seventh.
