Rochester woman found unresponsive in jail cell identified

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office has identified the woman who died in police custody Aug. 7 as 35-year-old Abriana Pesante of Rochester.

Deputies found Pesante unresponsive in her cell at the Monroe County Jail just after 7:30 a.m. when conducting security rounds, spokesman Sgt. Brendan Hurley said. Pesante was booked into the jail two days earlier on Aug. 5 for outstanding warrants.

Jail deputies initiated medical aid and Pesante was brought to Strong Memorial Hospital by ambulance, where she was pronounced dead around 8:45 a.m.

Hurley said an early investigation indicates the woman died from a “medical issue.” The exact cause of death is still under investigation, but Hurley said there were no obvious signs of suicide, overdose or foul play.
