Rochester residents can weigh in on major zoning changes

The Rochester City Planning Commission will be holding a special public meeting and informational session regarding the Zoning Alignment Project on June 8 and June 10.

During the meeting, the commission and attendees will hear a presentation from city staff about the new zoning code and proposed map that aligns with the comprehensive plan adopted in 2019.

After the presentation, attendees will be invited to offer public input on the proposed plans.

Rochester prepares for zoning changes

In simple terms, zoning determines the size, shape, style and location of buildings in an area. Other elements such as parking, landscape and accessory structures are also regulated through zoning.

According to the city’s Zoning Alignment Project, a comprehensive look at the zoning code is necessary in order to align with the Rochester 2034 Comprehensive Plan, a 15-year comprehensive plan to improve the community.

The city did a comprehensive look at its zoning code in 2003. Since then the city has changed in many ways from new residents to new businesses and emerging trends.

The meetings will take place at the Rochester City Hall in city council chambers on June 8 and June 10 at 6 p.m.
