Report: New York Giants would prefer not to start Jaxson Dart 'anytime soon'

Will the New York Giants bench veteran quarterback Russell Wilson in favor of rookie first-round pick Jaxson Dart?

If they do, it won’t be anytime soon.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Giants and head coach Brian Daboll have “no sense of urgency” to bench Wilson in favor of Dart and, ideally, would prefer the rookie not start “anytime soon.”

There is “no sense of urgency” in the New York Giants organization to bench Russell Wilson and start rookie Jaxson Dart, sources told ESPN.

It doesn’t mean a change can’t come soon at the quarterback position, but the Giants would prefer that it not happen anytime soon, according to sources. New York would prefer to continue to be patient, let Wilson play well and give Dart the time he needs to develop, sources said.

Schefter adds that the absence of left tackle Andrew Thomas is another reason the Giants would prefer to avoid putting Dart under center, which reflects poorly on the job done by general manager Joe Schoen.

The continued absence of left tackle Andrew Thomas also does not make it easier for the Giants to speed up their timeline to play Dart.

Although Dart admits he’d like to play and, as a competitor, is struggling on the sidelines, he’s determined to be the best teammate possible and have himself ready to go if and when called upon.

“I’m confident in myself, so whatever opportunity happens, or whatever may happen, I’m preparing for that opportunity. I feel like I’m going to go out there and succeed anytime I’m on the field. So that’s just kind of the approach that I have,” he told reporters this week.

The Giants had a package of plays installed for Dart in Week 1 against the Washington Commanders, but they were never able to run them as the offense struggled mightily and the team quickly fell behind.

It’s likely the Giants will have a similar package of plays ready for Dart in Week 2 against Dallas, but his reign as the starting quarterback remains far down the line.
